The Athlete

Name one other professional athlete in the history of all sports that has reached the pinnacle of their sport by being self-taught and self-coached? Charles started high jumping his senior year of high school in 1986 where he jumped a personal best of 6'11". In 1990, he finished his collegiate career becoming the second highest collegiate high jumper ever with a jump of 7' 8 1/2" and won the NCAA high jump title that same year with a jump of 7' 7 3/4". In 1991, Charles set the current American High jump record with a jump of 7' 10 1/2" in Zurich, Switzerland and followed that up a month later with winning the Outdoor World Championships in Tokyo, Japan equaling the championship record with a jump of 7' 9 3/4". The following year, Charles had a season best of 7' 7 3/4" and he competed in the 1992 Olympics and finished a disappointing eighth place with a jump of 7' 5 3/4". Then in 1993, even though his knee was giving him lots of trouble, he managed to jump 7' 8 1/2" during the indoor season. After the indoor season, he was told by four different doctors his high jumping career was over due to the damage he caused to his knee since first injuring it in 1990. After having surgery he started his journey back to the top. Charles took pride in rehabilitating himself after having surgery and in 1994 he jumped 7' 7", the eleventh highest in the world. In 1995, he jumped 7" 8", the fifth highest in the world that year. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he won the Olympic High Jump Gold setting the current Olympic High Jump Record. In addition, Charles is a 2-time World Champion, World Cup Champion, 9-Time National Champion. He is one of two high jumpers that has won the Olympics, Indoor World Championship, Outdoor World Championship and World Cup Championship. Also, he made three Olympic Teams, has the fifth highest jump in history and he jumped 22 inches over his head. His professional athletic career expanded over 15 years and he was inducted into the U.S.A. Track and Field Hall of Fame. In 2014, Charles set a Master's 45 to 50 World High Jump Record with a jump of 6' 8 3/4". Charles takes pride in all he has accomplished being 100% natural. rolling Stone Magazine listed Charles as one of the 100 Greatest U.S. Olympians of all time and his performance in Atlanta is considered one of the greatest in Olympic history.
